The mayor of Haldimand County says a regional Ontario Provincial Police officer has been shot and killed.

Mayor Shelley Bentley says in a statement that she is “deeply saddened” by the loss of one of the county’s officers who died in the line of duty.

Const. Edward Sanchuk of the Haldimand County OPP says in a video posted to Twitter that an officer was shot while responding to a vehicle in a ditch.

He says a male and female were seen fleeing from the scene.

An emergency alert has been issued advising all area residents to remain where they are as the suspect is believed to be armed.

They are searching for 25-year-old Randall McKenzie in a 2021 black Chevrolet pickup truck.

More coming.
