Dear Robert is noir mystery that comes out of dark nights in Kingston. You feel the ancient stones of the streets and buildings and the water of the lake that gathers from Niagara Falls and gains speed when it becomes the mythic St. Lawrence. The air is filled with beauty and larceny. Jim Garrard’s play is a tantalizer and features an uniquely Canadian femme fatale. Her gift for description and enticement is hard to match. Amanda is played by, Rebecca Gibian, an actress with a voice that is lower register – this is an artist equal to any mystery that lies and waits at the heart of this tale. Who would not want to receive a letter from Amanda? Who can resist the smell of the lilac forest that enchants the atmosphere of Wolfe Island? There is no better feeling than surrendering to a promise that may not be true.
Jack Nicholsen and Laska Sawade have come up with Special Delivery, an emotional and entertaining showcase about the history and power of letter writing in all its forms and occasions and delivers some unforgettable songs.
