Unbridled Theatre Collective proudly presents BROADWAY GOES WEILL’D – a musical theatre cabaret in support of their upcoming production of The Threepenny Opera. Taking place on Friday, March 21 at Trinity-St. Paul’s United Church, the event will feature cast members of the upcoming production, as well as some special guests, performing a selection of songs inspired by and celebrating the music of Kurt Weill, composer of The Threepenny Opera. The night will feature beloved songs from shows like Guys and Dolls, Chicago and Hamilton – as well as poetry, dance performances, and many other surprises. The event will feature a silent auction fundraiser for the upcoming production, as well as snacks, refreshments and special mocktails created just for the event.

The Threepenny Opera, based on John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, is a “play with music” written by Bertolt Brecht and Elisabeth Hauptmann, with music by Kurt Weill. Brecht’s alienation effect in combination with Weill’s various musical tools, including the cabaret classics Mack the Knife and Pirate Jenny, provides its audience with a confrontational depiction of corrupt capitalist class systems and hypocritical bourgeois morality. Through this gritty narrative, the raw underbelly of society is revealed and the visceral intricacies of human survival in an unjust world are dug up from its core.

Directed by Anita La Selva, this electric and immersive production features a cast of 14 ambitious emerging theatre artists who have come together to independently produce this exceptional piece, with the common goal of creating inventive, political, and exciting theatre for the city of Toronto. As well as supporting our BROADWAY GOES WEILL’D fundraiser, donations to the production can be made at https://www.gofundme.com/f/threepennytoronto
