A teenager on Kawacatoose First Nation was trying to flag down an RCMP vehicle when a second RCMP vehicle hit him, according to Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT).

The 16-year-old boy was seriously injured. SIRT, the province’s police watchdog agency, is investigating and provided new details in an April 11 news release.

The collision happened April 8 just after 10 p.m. CST while Punnichy RCMP officers were responding to a situation involving a gun at home on Kawacatoose First Nation.

Two RCMP officers, each driving a marked RCMP vehicle “with emergency equipment activated,” were travelling to the scene when a 16-year-old boy standing on the roadside tried flagging down one of the RCMP vehicles, according to the SIRT news release.

While the teen signaled for the first RCMP vehicle to stop, the second RCMP vehicle hit him while travelling in the southbound lane, according to SIRT.

The officers called EMS and gave first aid to the teen, who was eventually airlifted by STARS Ambulance to a Regina hospital, according to the SIRT news release. SIRT did not provide an update on the teen’s injuries.

The collision happened on the Kandahar grid road near a rural home about 600 metres from the main community site, RCMP said in an April 9 news release.

The initial RCMP statement did not include details about the teen flagging down one of the RCMP vehicles.

SIRT’s civilian executive director and six SIRT members traveled to Punnichy and Kawacatoose First Nation to investigate. A community liaison will be appointed, according to SIRT.

SIRT is tasked with investigating incidents in which civilians are injured or killed by on- or off-duty police officers, in-custody deaths and allegations of interpersonal violence involving a police officer.
