A woman is dead after she was assaulted in Pickering on Thursday, Durham Regional Police say, and nearby residents are being asked to shelter in place as police search for a suspect.

Staff Sgt. Joanne McCabe told CBC News in an email an elderly female was stabbed around 3 p.m. by an unknown male, who fled the area on foot

In an emergency alert sent out around 5:40 p.m., police said they were investigating a homicide suspect at 2125 Lynn Heights Dr. and asked residents to monitor media for updates.

Police say the woman was taken to a Toronto trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead.

The suspect is described as a brown male wearing a long black trench coat to his ankles, McCabe said.

There is a heavy police presence in the area of Fairport Road and Lynn Heights Drive, police said in a post on X shortly before 5 p.m.
