Police say a major highway in British Columbia was temporarily shut down on Saturday afternoon after a bull on the loose wandered into the middle of the roadway, blocking the traffic.

Abbotsford police said on social media that its emergency crews were on scene to deal with the bull on Highway 11, and that a stretch of the road had to be closed in both directions to ensure public safety.

Police said officers worked with the bull’s owner to resolve the situation and asked drivers to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles get through.

A bull had to be tranquilized by a local veterinarian after it wandered onto Highway 11 in Abbotsford, B.C. (Abbotsford Police Department)

In a later social media post, police said the bull was “successfully tranquilized by a local veterinarian and is uninjured.”

As of about 2:10 p.m. PT, Highway 11 had re-opened in both directions.
