It was the crash that launched a thousand quips online — and yes, it really happened. A driver collided with a driver examination centre in southwestern Ontario.
“I think they failed the test,” said one person who shared the photo on Reddit.
“Probably still passed!” said another.
It happened just before 3 p.m. ET Wednesday at the DriveTest Driver Examination Centre on Lambton Mall Road in Sarnia.
Staff Sgt. Jim McCabe of the Sarnia Police Service said a driver, whom he described as an elderly woman, was attempting to park but her foot slipped off the brake onto the gas pedal “and unfortunately that vehicle accelerated into the building.”
McCabe didn’t know whether the driver had been returning from a test or not.
Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. A man was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries, described as minor scrapes and bruises.
McCabe said no charges will be laid. The building was assessed and found to be repairable.
“It just unfortunately was driver error,” he said.
Sean Robbins witnessed the aftermath of the crash and shared a photo on social media.
“My first thought, of course, was, you know, for everybody’s safety. And then it was within seconds of that, it wasn’t beyond me, once I read the sign of the exact location, that somebody drove through the front door of the driver’s test.”
