Longueuil police are looking for the person who left a newborn baby boy on a doorstep on Sunday at around 11 p.m. ET.

Police said the person rang the doorbell and fled the scene. The people inside the home on Bourgeoys Street immediately called 911.

The newborn was found swaddled in a blanket with his umbilical cord still attached, according to police.

Police and paramedics provided care to the child, who was taken to hospital and is in good health.

Mélanie Mercille, spokesperson for the Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL), said the infant was born at 34 weeks.

She told Radio-Canada that information from the public has prompted investigators to conduct checks in Marguerite Bourgeoys Park, located near the residence where the baby was found.

The park was closed to the public on Monday.

Mercille said she couldn’t disclose the gender of the person who left the baby at the doorstep and that in her 17-year career as an officer, she had never seen such a case.

Police said they would go door to door on Monday to determine whether anyone in the area has camera footage that could help them locate the newborn’s parents.

Analyses will also be carried out to help police find the person who dropped the child off at the doorstep.
