Kelowna RCMP say one person has been arrested and remains in custody after a fire broke out in Knox Mountain Park Friday.

Police blocked off access to the park, located in a residential area near the city’s downtown core, after smoke and flames were discovered on the mountainside.

Police and the fire department also assisted hikers off the mountain.

High winds in the area were a concern, but crews managed to knock the flames down by 4:45 p.m. PT while remaining on the scene.

Knox Mountain Park is Kelowna’s largest natural park, the city says, spanning 3.85 square kilometres just north of downtown.

The city conducted controlled burning in the area on Oct. 16.
