New Travel Rules for Canadians Heading to Britain: ETA Becomes Mandatory

February 9, 2026 Team Contibutor

Here are some important changes coming up for UK-bound Canadians this month. Starting February 25, 2026, the United Kingdom will officially implement its new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for Canadian passport holders. This digital entry permit is mandatory for all visitors who do not currently require a visa for short stays of up to six months.

With the deadline fast approaching, Canadian travellers and travel advisors must understand that this is a legal requirement. Travellers without a valid ETA will be denied boarding by their transport carriers and will be unable to enter the UK.

“ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and give us a fuller picture of immigration,” this is what Mike Tapp, Britain’s Minister for Migration and Citizenship, had to say about the changes in a release.

Key details of the UK ETA rules

The ETA is part of a broader UK Home Office initiative to digitise border security and provide travellers with a seamless travel experience.

  • Effective Date: February 25, 2026.
  • Applicability: Canadians visiting for tourism, business, or short-term study (up to six months).
  • Enforcement: An ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) must be obtained before arriving at the airport or port of departure.
  • Cost & Validity: The application fee is £16 (approx. CAD $28), and it is valid for multiple entries over two years, or until your passport expires.
  • Every traveler, including children, must have their own individual ETA linked to their passport.

The “Dual Citizen” exception

A significant number of Canadians hold dual citizenship with the UK or Ireland. It is important to note that dual British or Irish citizens cannot apply for an ETA. To ensure seamless travel and avoid boarding issues, dual citizens must carry one of the following:

It must be noted that policy formulation and implementation rest with the UK Home Office. Canada Travel News, as a reliable platform, plays the role of communicating these updates to the wider public and gives space to voices that influence travel-friendly, positive policy-making.

To ensure you have the most accurate, relevant information, we highly recommend relying only on official government channels. Here’s a list of links for public access by the Home Office, providing up-to-date information:
