Several Canadians among nominees for animated films tonight
Montreal based filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski speak with CBC’s Ian Hanonmansing on what it’s like to be nominated for an Oscar for the second time. Their animated short film, The Girl Who Cried Pearls, is about a poor boy who falls in love with a girl whose sorrow turns into pearls.
Not one but two Canadian directors are among the nominees for best animated feature tonight, with Domee Shi for Elio and Maggie Kang for the Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters.
Montreal-based animation duo Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski are also nominated for their animated short The Girl Who Cried Pearls, which features voice acting from veteran Canadian actor Colm Feore and music from Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson.
Set in Montreal at the turn of the 20th century, the stop-motion film tells the story of a “girl overwhelmed by sorrow, the boy who loves her, and how greed leads good hearts to wicked deeds”, says the National Film Board, which produced the film.
