A brand of broccoli microgreens sold in Ontario and Quebec is being recalled over fears of pathogenic E. coli contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the recall affects 50-gram packages of Les Fermes Lufa broccoli microgreens sold from April 20 up to and including May 8.

In its recall statement, the CFIA said there had been no reported illness associated with this product.

In a statement to CBC News on Friday, Les Fermes Lufa said it received a voluntary recall notice on May 8 from Germina — its seed supplier —because of possible E. coli contamination.

Les Fermes Lufa says it then quarantined the remaining broccoli seeds and broccoli microgreens from its inventory while sending a preventative recall by email to the 1,024 clients who purchased the microgreens between April 20 and May 8.

“Our microgreens are only sold through our online Marketplace and delivered directly to clients, so every single person who purchased them was identified and notified,” the company’s statement reads.

“Still on May 8, we sent 10 units of our remaining microgreens to an independent lab to test for pathogens. The results for all samples came back negative.”

The CFIA says consumers should not consume, serve, use, sell or distribute the recalled product.

It says food contaminated with pathogenic E. coli may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and watery or bloody diarrhea.

In severe cases, the agency says some people may suffer seizures or strokes, require blood transfusions or kidney dialysis, or be left with permanent kidney damage. Some cases can be fatal.

Consumers who think they became sick after consuming the product are advised to contact a health-care provider.
