Royal Caribbean International has officially taken delivery of Legend of the Seas, marking a major expansion of its next-generation Icon Class fleet. Built at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessel is scheduled to make its debut on July 4, 2026, with Western Mediterranean sailings before relocating to Fort Lauderdale later in the year.
Third Icon Class Vessel Delivered
Legend of the Seas becomes the third ship in Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class, joining the fleet after Icon of the Seas debuted in 2024 and Star of the Seas followed in 2025. The handover ceremony in Turku marked the ship’s official transfer from Meyer Turku to Royal Caribbean.
The ship will travel to Cadiz, Spain, for its final outfitting before beginning services. It will then begin 7-night Mediterranean sailings from Barcelona and Rome before moving to Caribbean itineraries in November 2026.
As per PR Newswire, Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean, said “We’re incredibly proud to introduce Legend of the Seas to vacationers and continue the legacy of the revolutionary Icon Class.”
“This wouldn’t be possible without the many talented individuals that came together to deliver what is truly the ultimate family vacation, and we look forward to making Legend’s debut this summer a legendary one.”
Scale, Design and Capacity

LNG Power and Advanced Systems
The ship is Royal Caribbean’s latest LNG-powered vessel, equipped with advanced propulsion and energy systems:
- Six dual-fuel engines running primarily on LNG
- Fuel cells for lower-emission power generation
- Three azimuthing thrusters (20MW diesel-electric driven)
- Five bow thrusters for increased safety
The cruise also incorporates environmental technologies such as waste heat recovery and shore power connectivity as part of the company’s broader sustainability strategy.
Onboard Experience Highlights
The ship introduces a wide range of attractions for multigenerational travel:
- 28 dining venues, which includes immersive concepts
- Entertainment across stage, air, water and ice
- Seven pools and family-focused water attractions
- Eight themed neighborhoods, including Central Park with 30,500 plants
Signature Icon Class features such as the AquaDome and the Pearl kinetic sculpture are also included.
Rising Fuel Concerns Underscore Shift to LNG Fleet
This milestone comes amid growing industry concerns, especially the recent news about Royal Caribbean warning about rising fuel prices, increasing pressure on cruise operating costs. Newer vessels such as Legend of the Seas reflect the sector’s stronger emphasis on energy-efficient technologies to support long-term cost management and sustainability goals.
The delivery also forms part of Royal Caribbean Group’s long-term agreement with Meyer Turku, securing shipbuilding capacity through 2036, with additional Icon Class ships planned later this decade.
