The makers of Crown Royal whisky have entered into an agreement to sell their former bottling facility in Amherstburg, Ont., Diageo has confirmed to CBC.
“We can confirm that a purchase sale agreement for the Amherstburg facility has been signed,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
“The process remains confidential, and we are not currently in a position to share details regarding the purchaser. We will share additional information when appropriate.”
The company listed the property for sale in December 2025.
The facility closed its doors on Feb. 25.
Amherstburg Mayor Michael Prue told CBC that town council will only get involved in the future of the property if it requires a zoning amendment or an amendment to the official plan.
It is currently zoned for industrial use.
There has been quite a bit of interest in the property, Prue said.
Three or four businesses in the alcohol industry inquired about it last year, he said, and one made two offers that were both turned down.
Now that an agreement has been signed, both the buyer and the seller will do their due diligence over the next month or so, he said.
The buyer will be revealed once the sale is finalized.
“I’m really hopeful that something will come of this, and we can put those 165 people who lost their job back to work,” Prue said.
“We’re all happy that this is at least going this step forward.”
