A woman in her 20s has died after falling near Marvel Peak in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, marking the second fatal hiking accident in the park in less than a week. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, where 4 hikers were on a multi-day backcountry expedition from the British Columbia side of the Rockies.

Greg Tulloch, Canmore RCMP detachment commander Staff Sgt., said, “The female lost her footing and fell. She went down in a manner that was unsurvivable.”

Members of her group were able to reach her, provide first aid and contact emergency services. Rescue efforts were delayed by poor weather, and Parks Canada crews recovered the victim on Thursday, July 29, 2026.

Marvel Peak rises to roughly 2,650 metres in southern Banff National Park, about 3 kilometres from the Continental Divide.

The remote area sits near Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park and the Alberta-B.C. boundary.

Poor weather prevented rescue specialists from reaching the scene by helicopter on the day of the incident, delaying recovery efforts until the following morning.

Emergency crews were mobilized, while STARS and Alberta health responders were placed on standby during the operation.

The tragedy follows the recent death of a 65-year-old Calgary hiker on Mount Temple in Banff National Park on July 25, 2026. Earlier this summer, a 47-year-old woman from Airdrie also died while hiking Mount Bryant in Kananaskis Country, adding to concerns about mountain safety during the busy outdoor season.

While the circumstances of each incident differ, recent mountain emergencies across Alberta and British Columbia have highlighted the challenges rescuers face when accidents occur in remote, difficult-to-access terrain.
