Quebec’s police watchdog has confirmed that the man accused of killing his teen son was shot by police during his arrest.

The arrest put an end to a four-day manhut that followed the teen’s death.

Philippe Benoit, was found Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area near Lac-Aux-Sables in the Mauricie region, about 50 kilometres north of Shawinigan where the accused and the victim lived.

Shortly after the arrest was announced, a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) told CBC “police officers had to use force to subdue him.”

The police watchdog initially said that preliminary information suggests a person suffered gunshot wounds, wiithout specifying who.

“The person was reportedly hit by at least one police shot” and is in stable condition, the BEI wrote.

The BEI says six investigators have been tasked with looking into what happened leading up to Benoit being shot.

Benoit was airlifted to a nearby hospital around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. He is expected to appear in court Thursday afternoon.
