But after his death in 2023, many struggled to reconcile the revelations about his ketamine addiction with the lovable sitcom character they had come to know so well.
Now, Netflix is promising a more complete picture of the Canadian-raised actor in the three-part docuseries The One About Matthew Perry.
The show will trace Perry’s “journey from rising comedic star” to his signature role on the hit NBC series, the streaming giant said in a statement, with “never-before-heard testimonies” from those closest to him, including lifelong friends and his sister Mia Perry Bowick.
Bowick is a psychotherapist specializing in grief, who has publicly shared some of her own grieving process following Perry’s death.
“It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life — to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction,” she is said in the statement.
Perry was found dead from a ketamine overdose in his backyard hot tub at age 54.
Five people pleaded guilty to various crimes related to supplying him with the drug, though one of them — Dr. Salvador Plasencia who sold Perry ketamine — is appealing his 30-month prison sentence.
Netflix said the docuseries won’t just include memories from the people who adored Perry. It will also include “candid new details on his private struggles, honoring the legacy of honesty and advocacy he leaves behind.”
The docuseries premieres Oct. 27.
