WestJet has just announced new benefits to its rewards program for Canadians booking a winter sun escape. Travellers- pay attention to your loyalty points. WestJet fully integrates its largest vacation brand into its rewards program.
Starting today, WestJet Rewards members can earn points, tier-qualifying spend, and milestone-qualifying spend on eligible Sunwing Vacations packages. Top-tier WestJet Rewards members will also gain access to their day-of-travel benefits.
Book a Sunwing vacation, earn WestJet points
Before today, members could spend WestJet points on a Sunwing trip but couldn’t earn points on that booking. Now they can do both. Members earn one WestJet point for every dollar spent on an eligible Sunwing Vacations package.
Each guest on the booking with a WestJet Rewards ID earns based on their individual share of the total package price (excluding taxes, fees and charges).
On top of that, members earn tier qualifying spend and milestone qualifying spend at 20 percent of their individual share of the package price. This means a Sunwing vacation can now help push travellers toward WestJet Rewards’ higher membership tiers, not just their point balance.
Steve McClelland, WestJet Vice-President, Loyalty and Strategic Partnerships, had this to say: “Fully integrating Sunwing Vacations into the WestJet Rewards program is an exciting step forward in delivering even greater value for Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast,”.
He further added, “We’re creating more opportunities for members to turn travel and everyday spending into meaningful rewards, helping them get to their next vacation sooner and make the most of their travel experiences.”
Frequent travellers should watch out.
Silver, Gold, and Platinum members get an added practical perk: day-of-travel benefits, including free checked baggage allowance and priority services, now apply when checking in for a Sunwing Vacations flight through WestJet.
That’s a meaningful shift for status members who previously had to choose between booking directly with WestJet or booking a Sunwing package and leaving those perks behind.
All WestJet Rewards members booking Sunwing packages also get complimentary WestJet Wi-Fi, presented by TELUS, for the flight itself, letting travellers stream, browse, or stay connected without paying extra for in-flight internet.
Redemption still works the way you’d expect
The benefit of allowing WestJet Rewards members to redeem WestJet points on eligible Sunwing Vacations packages, which started in 2024, continues.
Members can redeem WestJet points for up to the full cost of an eligible Sunwing Vacations package, including taxes and fees. You’ll need a minimum redemption threshold of 5,000 points.
That flexibility, combined with the new earning structure, effectively turns a Sunwing booking into a two-way opportunity: earn points on the way in, redeem them on the way out.
Points add up faster with everyday spending. WestJet Rewards members can also link accounts with TELUS, Canadian Tire, and Skip to earn and redeem points through everyday purchases, not just travel bookings.
For travelers who make frequent purchases with these brands, it’s a faster route to a future Sunwing trip.
Just in time for your winter travel planning
Sunwing’s integration is a well-timed move from Canada’s largest sun destination network. If you’re a WestJet Rewards member, you have genuinely more options now to redeem and earn points as the winter season draws closer.
For Canadians already comparing sun destination packages this fall, it’s worth checking whether a preferred trip qualifies as an eligible Sunwing Vacations booking before locking in a payment method.
