A plan built on public input

September 25, 2026 Team Contributor

Wasaga Beach, home to the world’s longest freshwater beach, has unveiled a long-term plan to reposition itself as a year-round destination rather than a summer-only stop. The announcement builds on recent momentum around the town’s tourism ambitions, including a proposed gondola project aimed at boosting visitor access, and signals a broader push to reshape how travellers experience the region beyond peak season.

The Town of Wasaga Beach released its Destination Wasaga Master Plan on September 24, 2026, outlining a community-led vision for the beachfront, downtown core, public spaces and transportation connections over the coming years.

A plan built on public input

The master plan is the product of one of the largest public consultations in the town’s history, with more than 16,000 residents, visitors, businesses and stakeholders weighing in through surveys, workshops and public meetings.

“This plan belongs to the people who helped create it,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “It builds on everything our residents and generations of Ontarians have loved about Wasaga Beach and sets a bold course for what comes next.”

Extending the visitor’s season

Rather than pursuing higher visitor volumes, the plan prioritizes extending the length and season of existing visits. Wasaga Beach currently welcomes more than two million visitors annually, and officials say the strategy centres on capturing more value from that base through longer stays and stronger off-season demand – a shift that could reshape how travel advisors position the destination for clients planning Ontario getaways.

Planned infrastructure includes 4.5 kilometres of new boardwalk, 3.2 kilometres of bike paths, and 250 hectares of enhanced waterfront parkland. Concepts under consideration include a revived Dardanella performance venue and a pedestrian bridge across the Nottawasaga River connecting the beach end to end.

The Province of Ontario has already committed $38 million toward early-stage projects, including $11 million for the reconstruction of Beach Drive and $25 million to revitalize Nancy Island Historic Site. Private investment is also emerging, with a Marriott-branded hotel among the projects in early planning stages.

“Great communities do not stand still — they make deliberate choices about the future they want to build,” Smith added. “Destination Wasaga is our community’s bold vision, and with the continued support and partnership of the Province of Ontario, the Government of Canada and our other partners, we are ready to turn that vision into reality.”

As Wasaga Beach positions itself to meet multi-season demand, advisors building Ontario itineraries can enlist on Canadian Travel News’ advisor directory to connect with travellers researching destinations like this one.

Wasaga Beach prepares for the next phase

Implementation will proceed in phases, with individual projects subject to environmental, planning and financial approvals. The town says further updates, including Indigenous engagement outcomes and detailed project designs, will follow as the plan moves from vision to construction.
