Canada and Vietnam have recently finalized an expanded air transport agreement which enables direct flights between the two countries for the first time. Announced on 24th September 2026 in Ottawa, the updated framework for Canada – Vietnam direct flights is expected to establish a stronger aviation bridge for serving the growing cultural exchange, transpacific tourism and commercial ties across the Indo-Pacific region.

The expanded agreement directly speeds up travel demand between the two nations, replacing multi-leg connection routes with streamlined direct air corridors.

- Direct flight rights – first-time authorization for non-stop passenger service
- Bilateral Merchandise Trade (2025) – $20.6 billion total two-way trade
- Vietnamese Canadian population – ~275,000 residents driving VFR (Visiting Friends & Relatives)
- Cargo rights – Fifth-freedom rights for operational flexibility
- Weekly cargo capacity – Up to 7 weekly all-cargo flights per country
- Weekly passenger capacity – Up to 14 weekly passenger-combination flights per country
Canada – Vietnam direct flights – a game changer for tourism and cultural exchange
Until now, the Canadian travelers heading to Southeast Asia navigated layovers in the secondary transit hubs like Taipei, Seoul or Tokyo.
The introduction of up to 14 direct weekly passenger flights will significantly reduce the transit times for leisure travelers visiting Vietnam’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, coastal resorts and culinary hotspots like Hanoi and Ha Long Bay in the north to Hoi An, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in South.
The Canada – Vietnam direct flights will also play a vital role for the community. Canada is home to approximately 275,000 Vietnamese Canadians, creating a year-round and strong baseline demand for VFR travel, family visits and student exchanges.

Beyond the outbound leisure tourism from Canada, direct routes offer international students, Vietnamese travelers and business delegations seamless access to Canadian urban centers as well as eco-tourism destinations across the provinces.
This announcement directly aligns with the broader goals of Indo-Pacific diversification, facilitating both commercial traffic and leisure tourism across southeast Asia.
