What a PQ government means for the Outaouais

The historically Liberal-leaning west Quebec ridings of Pontiac, Hull, Gatineau, Chapleau and Papineau saw a return to their roots this evening, with the Liberals projected to take four out of the five seats.

It’s a rejection of the CAQ government voters took a chance on in 2022 in order to steer clear of the sovereignist Parti Québécois.

That changed tonight as well, with the PQ projected to take the Papineau seat, which hasn’t happened since 1976.

Liberal candidates said they plan to focus on issues around health care and education their region has faced for years.

Chapleau’s projected MNA-elect Michel Langevin told reporters he was eager to get to work, but would have to figure out how to do that within a PQ government.

PQ candidate Isabelle Millette, who was met with cheers in a Papineau bar after being declared the projected winner of her riding, said she looks forward to working with the Liberal party.

“Their priorities are similar to ours,” she said. “Representing the Outaouais in the National Assembly. To make sure we’re not forgotten, we’re not abandoned. We are here.”
