New direct access flight to the Canary Islands

October 26, 2026 Team Contributor

Canadians dreaming of winter sunshine now have a new nonstop option. Air Canada has officially launched direct flights between Toronto and Tenerife, creating the first scheduled air link between North America and the Canary Islands and giving travellers easier access to one of Spain’s most popular year-round holiday destinations.

The inaugural flight departed Toronto Pearson International Airport on October 25, 2026, with service to Tenerife South Airport aboard the airline’s Airbus A321XLR. The new route arrives as Air Canada continues to add destinations across its network, following other recently announced growth plans, including new cross-border services with United Airlines for Summer 2027. Read more about those plans in our coverage of Air Canada and United’s New U.S. Routes for Summer 2027.

New direct access flight to the Canary Islands

The new Toronto-Tenerife service will operate twice weekly throughout the winter season, departing every Thursday and Sunday. Flights are scheduled to continue until late April 2027.

A second nonstop route from Montréal-Trudeau International Airport will launch on October 31, operating once a week on Saturdays during the same seasonal period.

These flight services enable Canadian travellers to reach Tenerife without changing flights in European hubs such as Madrid, London or Frankfurt, bringing the Atlantic island within reach of tourists.

The airline says the addition of Tenerife indicates growing demand for convenient, nonstop access to warm destinations during Canada winter.

Flight schedule

Opening the door to Tenerife

The new Air Canada A321XLR Canary Islands service highlights how airlines are using longer-range narrowbody aircraft to serve destinations that previously had limited nonstop options from Canada.

The Airbus A321XLR allows Air Canada to operate flights of nearly nine hours while offering both Business Class and Economy cabins. The aircraft is helping Air Canada broaden its international reach, creating new nonstop connections between Canada and a growing list of European destinations popular among leisure travellers.

New-generation aircraft like the A321XLR are helping airlines extend their reach, bringing more nonstop international destinations within easy reach of travellers.

Tenerife gains ground in the Canadian market

Tenerife has long been a favourite winter destination among European travellers thanks to its warm climate, beaches, volcanic landscapes and outdoor activities. Popular resort areas such as Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos attract visitors throughout the year, while Mount Teide National Park remains one of the island’s best-known natural attractions.

For Canadian travellers, the new Air Canada A321XLR Canary Islands connection offers an alternative to traditional winter-sun destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico.

Travel advisors may also see growing interest in the Canary Islands as awareness of the destination increases in the Canadian market. At the same time, travellers looking for professional guidance can connect with local travel advisors to build customized European and island itineraries.

The market is about to get busier

Canada’s connection to the Canary Islands is set to expand further before the end of the year. Air Transat is scheduled to launch weekly flights from both Toronto and Montréal to Gran Canaria in December, further expanding Canadian access to the Canary Islands.

As the winter season progresses, the Air Canada A321XLR Canary Islands route will help reveal the extent of demand for direct flights from Canada to the Canary Islands. Travellers planning future Air Canada trips may also want to review the airline’s latest phone booking policies.
