The federal government has listed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 in Delta, B.C., as a “project of national interest” to expand and diversify Canada’s trade capacity.
In a news release, the government said the listing will give the project the “immediate regulatory certainty” it needs to be built at the Port of Vancouver, while keeping environmental safeguards and holding consultation with Indigenous communities.
The project, which is a proposed three-berth container terminal at Roberts Bank, will be led by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
A final investment decision is expected by mid-2027, according to the release.
The national interest designation, the release says, “accelerates the project’s commercial operations by up to four years, from 2039 to 2035.”
The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project is expected to add 2.4 million containers of annual capacity at the port, increasing container capacity at the Port of Vancouver by about 50 per cent.
The government said the project will support about 17,000 jobs across Canada’s supply chains and contribute about $3 billion annually to the national GDP.
The port authority has selected TerraMarine as its preferred construction partner after a competitive procurement process.
More to come.
