Air Canada Halifax to Barbados new route details

April 9, 2026 Team Contibutor

For those planning to visit the island nation, there’s some good news! A new Halifax to Barbados flight was officially announced on 7 April 2026. This nonstop service is a joint venture between Air Canada and Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) to enhance travel options from Atlantic Canada.

And it took over 18 months of strategic planning, data analysis, and concerted effort by key stakeholders, including regional partners in Atlantic Canada, to create the new pathway.

It aims to capitalize on Barbados’s growing popularity among Canadians, particularly those in the eastern provinces. Previously, passengers from Halifax typically had to connect through Toronto or Montreal to reach their destination.

Expressing her opinions on the Halifax to Barbados direct flight, Andrea Franklin, Chief Executive Officer of BTMI, had this to say: “With this new nonstop service, Barbados continues to strengthen its position within the Canadian market, enhancing ease of travel while reinforcing its reputation as a premier Caribbean destination.”

The new service is set to begin on 17 December 2026, running once weekly on Thursdays throughout the winter season. Tourists will be boarding a 177-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft on their Halifax to Barbados flight.

It will depart from Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) in the morning and arrive at Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) in Barbados in just over five hours.

Flights are now available for booking via Air Canada.

For Air Canada, this is a brand-new addition to their Atlantic gateway. They have never previously offered a direct, non-stop flight from Halifax to Bridgetown; Atlantic Canadians typically had to connect through Toronto or Montreal, adding 4–6 hours to their travel time.

While there have been occasional seasonal charters or connecting flights in the past, this new announcement is a major milestone because it marks the first-ever regularly scheduled non-stop service between Halifax and Barbados operated by Air Canada.

The timing of the Halifax to Barbados flight announcement

The Halifax to Barbados direct flight couldn’t have been more timely. Recent polls reveal 43 percent of Canadians now feel less inclined to visit the US. And the reasons are obvious. Statistics Canada reported a 24.3 percent drop in the number of Canadians returning from the US in January 2026 alone. This is in line with Canadians preferring Cuba, which is currently facing a crisis, or Mexico over US destinations like Florida.

Factors such as border security concerns and political friction under the current US administration have noticeably soured sentiment toward cross-border travel.

And Gooding-Edghill, the Minister of Tourism and International Transport, has every reason to be optimistic about the opening of the Air Canada Halifax to Barbados route.

How the new Halifax to Barbados flight will boost tourism

In 2025, Barbados recorded over 90,000 Canadian visitors, contributing to the island’s record-breaking year of nearly 730,000 long-stay arrivals.  Eusi Skeete, director, Canada, said: “In the last year, we have achieved the highest visitor arrivals from Canada in 45 years, welcomed expanded capacity on Air Canada from Toronto and increased frequency from Montréal.”

This solid performance established Canada as a top-tier market, second only to the US and the UK.

Tourists from key regions such as Ontario, Quebec, Western, and Atlantic Canada have been increasingly preferring the island nation. The recent announcement of the Halifax to Barbados flight will further funnel Canadians to the island nation.
