The Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Boards say schools will be open Tuesday after record-breaking snowfall on the weekend forced schools to close Monday.

In a letter to parents, guardians and students, the TDSB said its staff and contractors have been working steadily to clear away snow from schools and administrative sites.

As a result, schools can welcome students and staff back Tuesday, but conditions could be challenging in some areas, it said.

“While conditions will vary across the city, it is possible that sidewalks, parking lots and/or walkways around our schools and sites may be difficult to navigate given the significant amount of snowfall and the ongoing TDSB and City of Toronto snow clearing operations,” the TDSB said.

The TDSB urged parents and caregivers to give themselves and their children extra time when arriving at school.

School bus delays are also possible, it said.

In a social media post, the TCDSB said its schools will be open Tuesday and its buses will be running, but parents, caregivers and students should expect delays. Child-care and before and after-school programs will also be running but permits are cancelled.

“Please be patient as our teams work to clear snow, welcome students back and support a safe start to the day,” it said.

The York Region District also says its schools will be open Tuesday.

As for the 39 child care centres run by the City of Toronto, they will be open as well from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., the city said in a social media post.
