Carney weighs in on the group chat

Carney was asked whether he has any concerns about Canada sharing confidential information with the U.S. in light of a bombshell story published by The Atlantic yesterday.

The U.S. magazine’s editor-in-chief was accidentally added to a group chat with top U.S. officials, including Vice-President J.D. Vance and Defence Minister Pete Hegseth, and said he was looped in on top-secret plans to launch a drone strike targeting the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Carney said that he’s aware that information leaks from time to time, and said it’s a “serious issue” from which lessons must be taken. He added that Canada has “a very strong intelligence partnership with the U.S. through Five Eyes,” an intelligence alliance between several countries.

“My responsibility is to plan for the worst, is to think about the most difficult evolution of the new threat environment — what it means for Canada and how do we best protect Canada,” said Carney.

“Part of that response is to be more and more Canadian in our defence capabilities, more and more Canadian in our decisions, to take greater ownership … We have to look out for ourselves.”
