Sandals Foundation, Global Partners and Local Agencies Drive Support Across the Island
Jamaica’s national recovery efforts have accelerated over the past two weeks as government agencies, international partners, tourism groups, and major charitable organizations continue to support communities affected by Hurricane Melissa. With billions committed to rebuilding and grassroots relief underway across the island, Jamaica is working to restore essential services, repair infrastructure, and help families regain stability.
Earlier this month, the Jamaican government announced a sweeping US $6.7 billion reconstruction package, backed by development banks and international lenders. The multi-year investment will focus on restoring roads, utilities, housing, and tourism-related infrastructure—key pillars of the country’s economy. Officials say the plan will be coordinated across ministries to ensure both immediate recovery and long-term resilience.
Sandals Foundation Leads Major Community Relief Efforts
Among the most active organizations on the ground is the Sandals Foundation, which launched its “Hurricane Melissa Relief Mission” shortly after the storm. Working with trusted partners such as Team Rubicon and World Central Kitchen, Sandals teams have delivered thousands of essential supplies to communities hit hardest.

Over the past two weeks, volunteers have distributed more than 1,000 family care packages along with 6,000 cases of bottled water, hygiene kits, food supplies, and building materials. The organization has also supported hospitals, including the Bustamante Hospital for Children, with critical medical equipment and transport assistance.
In addition to emergency aid, the Foundation is beginning to focus on long-term rebuilding, including helping fishing communities replace gear and planning environmental restoration initiatives such as coral-reef rehabilitation—vital to coastal protection and tourism.
Corporate partners have stepped up as well. In Canada, Air Canada Vacations pledged a per-passenger donation for all packages sold during a recent two-day campaign, with proceeds supporting the Sandals Foundation’s relief efforts. International charitable group Meeting Needs also contributed funds to reinforce the Foundation’s work in Jamaica.
Tourism Sector Recovery Begins
As cleanup and repairs progress, major brands are outlining reopening plans. Sandals Resorts International confirmed that several of its Jamaican properties in Ocho Rios and Negril will reopen December 6, marking a significant milestone for the tourism sector, which is central to Jamaica’s economic recovery.
Hotels and tour operators across the island are working closely with the Ministry of Tourism, which recently issued a list of verified and reputable charities to guide safe and effective giving.
Broader Relief Efforts Continue Nationwide
Outside the tourism sector, global NGOs remain deeply engaged. Team Rubicon has deployed more than 40 volunteers to assist with medical response, debris removal, road clearing, and school and community-centre repairs. Roof tarping, structural assessments, and supply distribution have helped restore access to isolated communities.
Meanwhile, the Government of Canada, alongside other international partners, continues to funnel humanitarian support through the Red Cross and other agencies, focused on shelter, clean water, health services, and sanitation.
A separate $1-billion relief fund for tourism workers was also announced to help employees who lost homes or income due to storm damage.
Looking Ahead
While progress is visible, officials emphasize that recovery will take time. The reconstruction package announced by Jamaica represents only the beginning of a long-term effort to rebuild stronger, more resilient communities. Mental-health support, livelihood restoration, and infrastructure strengthening remain priorities as the island continues to mobilize local and international aid.
For travellers and supporters around the world, Jamaica’s message is clear: the island is rebuilding—with determination, coordination, and a powerful network of partners committed to helping communities recover.
