A man has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder after two people were killed near Grande Prairie, Alta. early Saturday morning.

Grande Prairie Rural RCMP were called to a shooting on a rural road in the area of Range road 35 and Township Road 730 in Grande Prairie County, police said in a news release.

Emergency crews found two dead on arrival. They have been identified as 54-year-old David Lagace and 44-year-old Michelle Lagace.

The initial investigation determined a possible suspect and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took control of the investigation.

A dangerous person alert was issued for northwestern Alberta around 11:30 a.m. In the alert, the suspect was described as armed and dangerous, having already fired on multiple individuals. He was said to be on the run in a black truck.

Around 1 p.m., police located the suspect’s vehicle near McLennan, Alta. The emergency response team, already deployed for public safety, was sent in and the suspect was safely taken into custody.

Police said the suspect and the deceased were known to each other.

The 42-year-old accused is in custody with a court appearance scheduled for Jan. 8.
