Moonhorse Dance Theatre’s Allison Cummings and TMU Associate Professor Louis Laberge-Côté have come together to revisit Phalanx, a piece that was performed in 1998 and again 1999. The original Phalanx was created by DNA Theatre, a collaboration between DNA’s artistic director Hillar Liitoja and his associate director at the time, Cathy Gordon.
This is not a full remount or an exact replication of the work. It is a revisit based on the foundation of the original that takes time to reflect on the multiple and vast changes to the landscape, our bodies, and perspectives on which it was originally presented.
The cast is made up of veteran Toronto based performers, dance, theatre, and interdisciplinary artists over the age of 45, some in the original, others not.
Phalanx: Revival is a contemplative homage to a piece and a time when we as the performers were at the brink of our careers and everything seemed magical and dangerous and possible as we sewed ourselves into the fabric of Toronto’s eclectic and exciting performance scene in our respective individual ways.
