The tourist office of Spain in Toronto is on a mission to invite Canadians to discover the beauty of Spain. It has launched a new podcast series titled “Finding Spain From Canada.” The podcast series has been created keeping the Canadian perspective in mind.
What each episode promises to deliver
Each episode promises to take the listeners on a unique journey to Spain through the eyes of Canadian journalists and travel professionals who have been there. They will share nostalgic experiences of their travels across Spain, gastronomic delights, its rich, vibrant culture, and hidden gems beyond the cacophony of big cities. The retelling is bound to resonate with the Canadian audience, putting lesser-known places in a new light.
The podcasts will follow a wider trajectory, bringing fond stories from interior cities like León or Seville to islands like Gran Canaria or Tenerife, famed for their unique volcanic geography.
First stop: The Renaissance cities of Castilla y León
Castilla y Léon, the city where Renaissance history and Baroque glory converge to create a magnetic charm, is the choice for the series’ first episode. Canadian travel journalist Doug Wallace will recount his experiences of the city.
“Every time I visit Spain, I not only discover something new, but I also bring back something inspiring to apply to my regular life—a stimulating idea, an ingredient, a wine or a refreshed attitude—that lasts long after the trip is over, “ said Wallace.
“There’s something about Spain that sets the travel bar a bit higher each time, such an exciting mix of old and new. I could talk about it for hours.”
The first episode is available on Spotify. It can be accessed here –
The tourist office said it will release additional episodes every 8 weeks through 2026.
Why Canadians Are Choosing Spain
As Canadians broaden their travel choices beyond traditional destinations like the US, Spain is emerging as one of the top picks for long-haul travel. CTN brings you some quick facts.
- According to Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE), Spain attracts between 630,000 and 650,000 Canadian tourists each year.
- Catalonia (including Barcelona) remains the top destination for Canadians, followed by Madrid and Andalusia.
- In 2023, a massive surge occurred during the post-pandemic travel rebound.
- Statistics Canada data show travel peaks significantly in the second quarter (April to June) and during the summer months — the best time to visit Spain from Canada.
- Most Canadians travel to Spain for leisure, staying significantly longer than tourists from France, Portugal, and the UK due to the trans-Atlantic distance.
- Key draws include diverse cultural experiences, pleasant climate, history, gastronomy, and direct flight options from Canada to Spain.
More in the offing
Spain is actively promoting itself to Canadian travellers through tourism offices and marketing campaigns, tapping into growing interest in Europe as a holiday destination. With a strong focus on bringing its lesser-known regions to the traveller’s map, the tourist office has announced that it will bring more exciting news for Canadians as the year progresses.
