The passengers aboard a Cabo San Lucas-bound flight from Vancouver International Airport on Saturday morning were in for an unpleasant surprise, as the WestJet flight WS2662 incident unfolded unexpectedly.
10 passengers aboard the WestJet flight to Mexico created a fracas during routine crew instructions, raising safety concerns and delaying the flight by about 2 hours. They seem to be a single group travelling together.
Little did the 10 passengers on board know that their recklessness would land them in soup. They were swiftly taken into custody by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and charges have been recommended against them following the WestJet passenger incident.
What actually transpired aboard flight WS2662?
The scene unfolded on a Saturday morning, much to the discontent of fellow passengers, marking yet another case of unruly passengers in Canada. The Richmond RCMP swung into action at 7:30 AM on a verified report of purported unruly behaviour by 10 people on board.
“Richmond RCMP officers attended and worked with airline staff to safely de-escalate the situation, which included directing passengers to deplane,” the statement from the police reads.
It was only after the unruly passengers were deplaned that the flight took off 2 hours late, adding to a growing list of flight disruptions in Canada. No injuries were reported during the incident.
They were released on undertakings and asked to appear in Richmond Provincial Court at a later date.
Charges likely under the Criminal Code and the Aeronautics Act
The matter doesn’t end there. Assessing the severity of the issue, a Tuesday update states that the police are recommending charges under the Criminal Code. The police are also invoking provisions of the Aeronautics Act for failure to comply with crew instructions.
We reached out to WestJet for a comment. In response, WestJet has said that a thorough review of the incident is underway.
The most recent precedent
The most recent similar flight disruption in Canada occurred just two months ago, on February 7, 2026, aboard Air Canada Flight AC858.
The flight travelling from Toronto to London (Heathrow) was forced to make an emergency diversion to St. John’s, Newfoundland. A single unruly passenger became disruptive enough that the pilot determined it was a safety risk to continue across the Atlantic.
Broader context
The WestJet flight WS2662 incident is not a one-off. While these incidents are reported worldwide, cases of unruly passengers in Canada have been rising. In 2025, Canadian transportation authorities logged 114 such reports.
Interestingly, WestJet accounted for nearly 60% of those reports, followed by Air Canada, highlighting a growing operational and safety challenge for airlines.
