After a decade since its final show, The Tragically Hip is set to let Canadians re-live the 2016 broadcast of the last Man Machine Poem concert with a special broadcast on CBC this summer.
On Aug. 22, fans can watch The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration concert at 7 p.m. local time on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio and CBC Music’s YouTube page.
The original concert took place in The Hip’s hometown of Kingston, Ont., on Aug. 20, 2016, and aired on CBC where 11.7 million people tuned in. It was the band’s last tour before the death of frontman Gord Downie, who died from brain cancer on Oct. 17, 2017.
To commemorate the show, the band is also releasing a new live album the day before the broadcast on Aug. 21. The Tragically Hip: Live July 22 – August 20, 2016 was mixed and mastered by the band’s longtime audio engineer Mark Vreeken, and will feature live recordings of songs such as Ahead By a Century, New Orleans is Sinking and more from the last cross-country tour.
The live versions of Fifty-Mission Cap, which was recorded in Edmonton and Locked In The Trunk Of A Car, from the last Kingston show, are out now.
Next up, the band will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in September at Toronto’s Massey Hall.
