WestJet is about to introduce a new local flavour to its in-flight experience. With its new announcement of a partnership with Calgary-based Tool Shed Brewing Company, it will serve craft beer on select flights beginning on July 15th.

  • People Skills – An easy-drinking, mass appeal beer. Brewed at Tool Shed since day one.
  • Golden Hour – Tool Shed’s most drinkable premium style beer. It is hazy, refreshing and hoppy with zero bitterness.
  • Local Legend – A new low-alcohol craft lager crafted to deliver a taste so good, guests won’t know it has just 3.5 per cent alcohol content.

These are available for purchase on select WestJet flights from the buy-on-board beverage and food menu service.

WestJet – Tool Shed: Bringing the local flavours to the sky

“Partnering with Tool Shed Brewing allows WestJet to bring a taste of Calgary to the skies. Their products support local hardworking farmers and businesses, which is something we hope our guests will be happy to get behind,” – Steve McClelland, WestJet Vice President, Loyalty and Partnerships.

Tool Shed is a Calgary-based craft brewery, founded in 2012. It is known for using Canadian-grown ingredients and supporting local agriculture. This positions the in-flight beverage as a sustainable choice.

July 15th onwards, travellers for eligible flights will be able to choose their favourite brews as part of WestJet’s paid onboard menu.

A rising focus on experience

The WestJet-Tool Shed announcement reflects a bigger shift among the airlines towards enhancing the onboard experience beyond just transportation.

The airlines are increasingly:

  • Offering more personalised travel experiences
  • Highlighting the regional identity
  • Partnering with local beverage and food brands

For travellers, this means more location-inspired, unique options even at 30,000 feet in the sky.

An experience beyond flight

WestJet’s new partnership also comes with some on-the-ground benefits as well.

Now the passengers can receive:

  • 15% discount at the Tool Shed taproom in Calgary
  • The discount is valid 24 hours after or before the flight (boarding pass to be shown)

The new WestJet-Tool Shed experience effectively connects destination experience with flight experience – something that airlines today are increasingly trying to offer to their travellers.

A collaboration that strengthens the Calgary connection

For WestJet, this collaboration is all about enhancing its connection to its Calgary roots, and for Tool Shed, it is about gaining exposure to millions of travellers across the airline’s network.

Graham Sherman, founder of Tool Shed, described the partnership as a natural fit, noting similarities in both the brand’s focus on Canadian customer experience and entrepreneurship.

While it is small in scale, this change hints at a broader aviation trend in which airlines are using food and beverage partnerships to differentiate themselves and create more memorable journeys.
