A major change to the Canadian passport renewal program took effect on July 28, with the federal government eliminating the daily cap on online applications for eligible adults. The move gives qualifying passport holders more flexibility to renew online as Ottawa continues its push toward digital service delivery.
The expansion follows the initial launch of the digital renewal platform in December 2024 and marks another step in the modernization of federal travel document services.
Eligibility, Processing and Requirements for Passport Renewal
The federal government has removed the 2,000-per-day cap on online passport renewals for eligible adults in Canada. Online renewals are available only to eligible adults whose passports expire within 6 months or have already expired.

“The online passport renewal service is a great example of modernizing our service delivery landscape and improving the passport program. - Urgent, express, or 10-business-day passport services still require an in-person application.
