Eligibility, Processing and Requirements for Passport Renewal

A major change to the Canadian passport renewal program took effect on July 28, with the federal government eliminating the daily cap on online applications for eligible adults. The move gives qualifying passport holders more flexibility to renew online as Ottawa continues its push toward digital service delivery.

The expansion follows the initial launch of the digital renewal platform in December 2024 and marks another step in the modernization of federal travel document services.

Eligibility, Processing and Requirements for Passport Renewal

The federal government has removed the 2,000-per-day cap on online passport renewals for eligible adults in Canada. Online renewals are available only to eligible adults whose passports expire within 6 months or have already expired.

Annie Koutrakis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Jobs and Families, said, “The Government of Canada is working to make services more efficient and better suited to the needs of Canadians.

“The online passport renewal service is a great example of modernizing our service delivery landscape and improving the passport program. In the long term, this online service will reduce wait times at our points of service and benefit Canadians who can spend more time where it matters the most to them.”

What applicants need to know:

  • Applicants must be in Canada to use the online service.
  • A commercially taken passport photo is required, and applicants must upload a digital photo file from the photographer.
  • Application requirements differ slightly from mail-in and in-person renewals.
  • Processing follows the same 20-business-day service standard as most simplified adult renewals.
  • Applicants can track their file through real-time status updates.
  • Urgent, express, or 10-business-day passport services still require an in-person application.
  • Canadians applying from outside the country must use mail services or a Government of Canada office abroad.
  • In-person and mail-in passport renewal options remain available.

Why the Passport Renewal Changes Matter

The move is expected to make the process of passport renewal in Canada more accessible, particularly for people in rural or remote communities and those who face challenges visiting a Service Canada Office.

For travellers looking to renew Canada passport documents ahead of upcoming trips, the online system follows the same 20-business-day service standard as most standard renewal applications. Applicants can also track progress through real-time status updates.

For applicants aged 16 and above:

“Eligible Canadians aged 16 and older can now apply online to renew their passports. The government will monitor the program ‘as we continue to improve, perhaps adding children, perhaps adding population that is not in Canada, and so on.”

– Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC), as reported by CBC

Travel Takeaway

The latest expansion of Canadian passport renewals removes a key barrier to accessing passport services online. However, residents requiring a passport within 10 business days, or seeking express or urgent processing, must still apply in person through designated Service Canada Centres or passport offices.

A series of passport service enhancements rolled out this year, including updated fees, expanded processing options and a 30-day service guarantee. With online renewals now more widely accessible, eligible Canadians have greater flexibility when preparing for upcoming trips.
