‘You’ve been running this province for a decade, and nothing is better’: Doerkson to Eby
Eby hoped to use that deficit section of the debate to talk about his new tax on millionaires. But it turned into a two-on-one attack on whether it was the best fiscal policy to achieve his ends.
“I’m upfront with British Columbians: we need to improve health care … so we’re asking the wealthiest British Columbians to pay a little bit more,” he says.
But both Doerkson and Lowan point out that the new tax plan increases the tax rate on all income above $190,000, which would affect a lot more people than just millionaires.
“You’re taxing work, while we’re wanting to tax wealth,” Lowan says, arguing that the Green Party’s tax on resource royalties would bring much more than the estimated $1 billion yearly from the NDP’s tax increases.
At the end of the back and forth, Doerkson gets off a line that seemed a clear bid to make an impact, telling Eby: “You’ve been running this province for a decade, and nothing is better.”
Eby responds: “You’re the guy who brought Gordon Campbell back, and British Columbians remember Gordon Campbell,” referring to the B.C. Liberal premier from 2001 to 2011.
