A baby is dead and a toddler is still missing after they were unable to be rescued from a burning house in Brazeau County, police said.

Breton RCMP received a call at 12:30 p.m. Thursday about a fire at a house somewhere along Township Road 482, southwest of Edmonton, according to an RCMP news release issued Friday afternoon.

When responding Mounties arrived, they learned a woman and two children were about to evacuate the home but that an infant and toddler were still inside, police said.

Firefighters worked on the fire, which has since been extinguished, but rescue attempts for the young children “were not possible,” police said.

Mounties found the baby’s body during the first search of the burned building. The child’s remains have been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton, police said.

The toddler is still unaccounted for but the search continues, stated the news release.

Officials are still investigating the fire’s cause.

Brazeau County is roughly 120 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
