Canada Nigeria direct flights – Details from the expanded agreement

August 7, 2026 Team Contributor

Canada Nigeria direct flights are a significant step closer to reality following the expansion of the bilateral air transport agreement between the two countries.

The updated deal, announced by Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, enables direct scheduled flights between Nigeria and Canada for the first time, broadening opportunities for cargo operators, students, businesses, and travelers.

The agreement is expected to strengthen investment and trade ties while enhancing connectivity between Africa’s largest and fastest-growing economies and Canada.

Canada Nigeria direct flights – Details from the expanded agreement

The revised Canada-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement introduces many major changes that are designed to support cargo and passenger growth:

  • Fifth freedom for cargo operators, enabling airlines to transport freight between foreign countries when the route ends or begins in their home country.
  • Up to 10 weekly all-cargo flights per country.
  • Up to 14 weekly passenger flights per country.
  • Multiple airlines from countries to operate scheduled services.

The changes represent the first major expansion of the agreement since it was originally negotiated in 2014.

Why Canada Nigeria direct flights matter

The launch of potential Canada Nigeria direct flights can significantly reduce travel times for passengers who currently depend on connections through the Middle East, Europe or North Africa.

The agreement is expected to benefit:

  • The large Nigerian-Canadian community
  • Tourism operators
  • Families visiting relatives
  • Cargo operators
  • Students
  • Business travellers

Canada is home to one of the fastest-growing Nigerian communities, settled across cities like Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, Brampton, and Toronto, maintaining strong people-to-people ties with Nigeria.

25000+ Nigerians had Canadian study permits as of 31st March 2026, highlighting the rising education as well as economic links between the two nations.

Rising demand behind the expansion

Transport Canada noted that the Canada Nigeria air travel market has doubled in the past 10 years.

Nigeria, with a population of 237 million+ people, has turned into Canada’s third-largest bilateral aviation market in Africa after Algeria and Morocco.

Government officials say that demand growth reflects the rising migration, commercial activity, tourism, and education between the two nations.

Government officials highlight the economic benefits

“By expanding our air transport agreements, we are creating new opportunities for Canadian airlines and giving travelers more choice,” – Steven MacKinnon.

The International Trade Minister, Maninder Sidhu, emphasized Nigeria’s rising importance as a commercial partner and highlighted the strong Nigerian-Canadian community as a crucial factor behind the agreement.

When can the flights begin?

While the agreement now permits carriers to launch service, airlines have not yet announced any specific routes or schedules.

The expansion creates a framework that is important for airlines to start planning flights between Nigerian and Canadian cities.

Industry observers will now be closely watching to see which carriers move first to capitalize on the newly expanded market.

The approval of Canada Nigeria direct flights creates a major milestone in aviation relations between Canada and Nigeria. With stronger business ties, a growing diaspora, and rising travel demand, this agreement can reshape connectivity between West Africa and Canada while creating new opportunities for passengers and cargo alike.
