Michael Barber wins silver in men’s T20 1,500m final
After winning a silver medal in the 1,500-metre T20 men’s final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Michael Barber of Victoria spoke glowingly about his father Gary Barber, who also ran for Canada at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
Michael Barber captured silver in the men’s T20 1,500m final, calling the achievement a moment he will never forget.
“I can’t describe how much this means to me,” Barber told CBC Sports’ Marissa Papaconstantinou. “It’s been a really challenging year and a half to get to this point, and I’m so pleased to be on the podium again.”
Barber also reflected on continuing his family’s Commonwealth Games legacy, following in the footsteps of his father Gary, who competed for Canada at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
“It means a lot. My dad ran the Commonwealth Games 36 years ago, and I’m thrilled to bring along this legacy. He watched me tonight and was absolutely thrilled for me to get this experience.”
On the support from Team Canada, his family, and fans back home, Barber added: “I appreciate all of you cheering me on and supporting me throughout this process. I really thank you all for this glorious moment.”
