Blockbuster romance author Carley Fortune has announced that her sixth novel, Only in Summer, will be released on May 18, 2027.
Only in Summer takes readers back to Fortune’s beloved Barry’s Bay, Ont., the setting of her previous novels Every Summer After and One Golden Summer, and the town where she grew up.
“Just before I began writing, I bought my own cottage on a lake near Barry’s Bay,” Fortune wrote in a newsletter announcement. “Ever since we sold our family home on the lake, it’s been my dream to have a cottage of my own.”
In Only in Summer, the novel’s main character Eleanor Florek shares the same dream.
Eleanor (who goes by the nickname Ellie) is the cousin of characters Charlie and Sam from Fortune’s two other Barry’s Bay novels. Ellie spent her childhood in Barry’s Bay and always wanted to buy her own property there. When she finally saves up enough to do so, Ellie is taken aback to learn that the small house next door is being demolished so its handsome new owner can build a mansion.
And while that’s about all Fortune has revealed to date, one can only guess that a reluctant romance will ensue in the lakeside setting.
Fortune is a Toronto-based writer and journalist who has worked as an editor for Refinery29, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine and Toronto Life. Her previous books are Our Perfect Storm, One Golden Summer, Every Summer After, This Summer Will Be Different and Meet Me at the Lake.
Meet Me at the Lake was a finalist on Canada Reads in 2024. It was championed by fashion content creator and model Mirian Njoh — making it the first romance novel to ever appear on the show.
Every Summer After was adapted into the Amazon Prime Video television show Every Year After, which premiered this summer and was renewed for a second season, based on One Golden Summer. Netflix Canada is adapting This Summer Will Be Different into a 10-episode series.
