Can women’s gymnastics team match men’s gold medal?

Now you know: Ellie Black

Get to know three-time Commonwealth Games champion gymnast Ellie Black, as she will be competing for Canada at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Hi, I’m an associate producer for CBC Sports. Canada took home gold in the men’s artistic gymnastics team event on Day 1, and now the Canadian women are looking to match that performance. The Canadian team of Gabrielle Black, Lia-Monica Fontaine, Lia Grace Redick, three-time Commonwealth Games champion Ellie Black, and Alyssa Guerrier-Calixte will compete in the team final and individual qualification Subdivision 4, which is live now.

Their quest for gold begins on the uneven bars before moving to the balance beam, floor exercise, and finishing on vault. Four-time Olympian Ellie Black is competing in her third Commonwealth Games after winning three medals — two gold and one silver — at Gold Coast 2018. Rising star Fontaine will make her Commonwealth Games debut following a two-medal performance at the 2026 Pan American Championships and a silver medal on vault at the 2025 world championships. The team is rounded out by Commonwealth Games debutantes Black, Redick, and Guerrier-Calixte, all of whom helped Canada capture bronze in the team final at the 2026 Pan American championships. Canada also earned bronze in this event at Birmingham 2022, but none of the athletes from that medal-winning team are returning in 2026.
