Election call looks likely by Tuesday
It’s been another momentous day in B.C. politics.
Of course, the biggest question underlying today’s events is: Will an election actually happen and, if so, when would the vote be?
Eby sidestepped the question at his UBCM speech and news conference, saying only, “I don’t have any announcements to make about an election today” and making a couple jokes about the anxiety local politicians are facing around potentially duelling elections.
But there’s very strong evidence the premier is planning to call an election on or before Tuesday, Sept. 22.
The reason? The NDP doesn’t want to wait until after the Abbotsford-Mission byelection that Findlay is contesting, which takes place on Sept. 26.
At the same time, under Elections B.C. law, if an election is called on Sept. 23, 24 or 25, the election would have to fall on Halloween — and no politician wants to annoy the parents of young families.
So, most people are pencilling in an election call in the next four days, with a general voting day of Oct. 24.
We’ll see if Eby further surprises people or not.
