An emergency vehicle procession honoured a soldier who died in the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright fire as his remains travelled through Saskatoon on the way home to Prince Albert, Sask., on Saturday.

The City of Prince Albert announced a vigil for Pte. Shaun Farrell on Sunday at Memorial Square on Central Avenue for those who knew him and members of the community.

The procession on Saturday included local police, fire, ambulance and other emergency service vehicles as it left from the Sgt. Hugh Cairns V.C. Armoury shortly after 2:00 p.m. MT. Flags at the Saskatoon armoury were lowered to half-mast.

The procession arrived at Gray’s Funeral Chapel in Prince Albert Saturday afternoon.

Farrell, 23, was one of four people who died in a fire at a military base in Wainwright, Alta., on Oct. 17. Another 39 people were injured.

Others in Saskatchewan are continuing to pay their respects.

The Royal Canadian Air Force put on a tribute at the Saskatchewan Roughriders Game on Saturday.

Farrell’s mother, Patricia Farrell, said he was from South Africa and moved to Prince Albert in 2017.

“He wanted to be in the army. That was his dream,” she told a reporters on Thursday.
