John Tory, the former mayor of Toronto, is the new chair of the board of directors of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
In a statement, Tory said he was “excited” to work with TIFF’s board and its leaders, as well as artists, filmmakers and the broader TIFF community “to help shape its next chapter.”
Tory’s term begins on Oct. 1, according to a Thursday news release. This year’s festival runs Sept. 10 to 20.
He replaces Jeffrey Remedios, who had served as chair since 2021.
Remedios praised TIFF and its leadership, saying he’d be “forever proud of the part I’ve played” in the film festival’s journey.
TIFF also announced that it was welcoming three new members to its board of directors — Deborah Flint, David Furnish and Daniel Tisch Echevarría.
The organization also said Asha Daniere is leaving the board after serving on it for nine years. TIFF said it extended “its sincere thanks and appreciation for her years of service and contribution to the organization.“
