How the new Egypt digital visa-on-arrival system works

July 24, 2026 Team Contributor

Egypt is taking a major step toward modernizing its border entry process with the launch of a new Egypt digital visa-on-arrival system, designed to reduce wait times and offer travelers a paperless, faster arrival experience.

The pilot program will begin on 1st August 2026 across all arrival terminals at Cairo International Airport before rolling out to other airports.

This initiative replaces Egypt’s traditional visa sticker process with a QR-code-based digital visa system, part of a broader effort to create a more technology-driven and more seamless travel experience.

How the new Egypt digital visa-on-arrival system works

Travelers will be able to obtain their visa QR code through multiple channels, including:

  • Self-service kiosks located in Cairo International Airport arrival halls
  • Egypt’s official mobile application
  • The official online visa portal

The QR code can be generated before departure, after landing, or before departure. Border officers will scan the QR code alongside the traveler’s passport to complete the immigration processing.

Each QR code remains valid for 48 hours from the time it is issued.

Visa rollout and cost plan

The total cost of digital visas is set at US$3, which consists of:

  • US$30 visa fee
  • US6 issuance fee

During the pilot phase, both traditional paper visa stickers and the digital visa system will operate side by side. Once the trial period continues, authorities plan to phase out the sticker system and make the digital QR code visa the primary entry method.

The government has confirmed that additional airports will join the program during later phases, with rollout dates to be announced in advance.

Why it matters for travelers

The new Egypt digital visa-on-arrival system is expected to:

  • Enhance convenience for international visitors
  • Improve airport passenger flow
  • Minimize paperwork
  • Reduce immigration processing times

This move aligns Egypt with a rising number of destinations adopting digital entry systems as tourism authorities seek to streamline travel and improve the visitor experience.

Part of Egypt’s tourism modernization push

Tourism remains a critical economic sector in Egypt, with destinations such as Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, and the Red Sea resorts attracting millions of visitors annually.

By digitizing visa processing, officials hope to remove friction from the arrival experience and strengthen Egypt’s competitiveness as an international tourism destination. The launch of the Egypt digital visa-on-arrival system represents one of the country’s most significant travel technology upgrades in recent years. If the Cairo pilot proves successful, travelers could soon experience quicker and more efficient border processing at airports across Egypt.
