An employee at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport has died, the airport authority confirmed Tuesday morning, after they were struck by a plane on Monday evening.
Montreal police say the plane was reversing when it hit the ground crew worker. According to the airport authority, emergency measures were deployed around 7:30 p.m.
The employee was then rushed to hospital but succumbed to their injuries.
“The loss of a member of our airport community affects us all deeply,” the airport authority wrote in a statement Tuesday, calling the incident a “tragic workplace accident.”
The plane belonging to the airline French Bee was scheduled to leave for Paris at 6 p.m. ET. on Monday.
Radio-Canada is also reporting that the flight in question was originally scheduled to leave Montreal on Sunday but was postponed.
On Monday evening, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada says it was aware of the incident and directed inquiries from journalists to the airport.
On Tuesday morning, Montreal police said Employment and Social Development Canada, a federal government agency, had opened an investigation.
In its statement, the airport said it was co-operating with authorities responsible for the investigation and “swiftly implemented assistance and support measures for employees and passengers who witnessed this tragic accident.”
