To mark the beginning of the World Cup, Niagara Falls will shine to honour Canada, Mexico and the United States — the three host nations.

At 10 p.m. on June 11, a 15-minute light show will celebrate the start of the international soccer event. Then, the Falls will shine green, red and white for Mexico, Niagara Parks said Wednesday.

The light show will happen each night of the tournament, along with the colours of each host country on their respective game days during the group stage.

On June 12, for example, the Falls will shine red and white for Canada, then red, white and blue for the U.S.

Since 1925, the Niagara Falls Illumination Board has managed the lighting of the Falls. It’s made up of representatives from the cities of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Niagara Falls, N.Y., Ontario Power Generation Inc., New York Power Authority, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Niagara Parks Commission.
