A Winnipeg Sea Bears player who was assaulted and seriously injured has been released from hospital, according to the team, which says he was injured by security at a downtown Winnipeg nightclub.
Teddy Allen was assaulted downtown Sunday night and hospitalized, the Canadian Elite Basketball League team said in a news release Monday.
“What we’ve seen and heard to date leads us to believe that Teddy was the victim of an assault at the hands of security,” the team said in an update on Tuesday.
“No person should ever be subjected to the brutality of what happened to Teddy,” the team’s unsigned statement said, describing Allen’s injuries as “significant.”
The statement said Allen is out of hospital but “will require further diagnosis, followup care and potentially surgery.”
A star scorer, Allen will miss the Sea Bears’ Thursday night playoff game as he recuperates at home, team president Rhéanne Marcoux said earlier Tuesday, prior to the statement’s release.
“At least he’s out of hospital,” Marcoux said in an interview with Radio-Canada. She said she couldn’t comment further in light of the Winnipeg police investigation currently underway.
Speaking to reporters after the team’s practice Tuesday, head coach and general manager Mike Raimbault declined to provide more detail about the incident, saying the team’s statement is “encompassing of where we’re at at this point.”
“We’re thinking about Teddy as a human and as a person and as a friend and a teammate,” he said.
“Today was a workday, but also a heavy heart day, where we’re thinking about him.”
Sea Bears chairman and team owner David Asper was not made available to discuss the incident Tuesday.
Police investigating
The team also said in its statement it continues to co-operate with police and “have referred them individuals and information based on what has been provided to us from those on the scene.”
Winnipeg police have confirmed they are aware of the incident. Their investigation is continuing, spokesperson Const. Pat Saydak said Tuesday after CBC News asked for an update.
The situation unfolded just days before the second-place CEBL Western Conference team is set to open its western semifinal series against the Saskatoon Mamba, who sit third in the conference.
In July, Allen set CEBL and franchise records for most points scored in a single game and most points by a player in a season.
Not having Allen’s firepower on Thursday will “definitely” have an impact on his teammates, Marcoux said. But, she added, the players remain excited for the series and having home-court advantage.
Marcoux said she hopes the situation won’t affect turnout.
The assault is an isolated event, she said, and she believes fans will still come out to cheer on the team.
The Sea Bears finished the 2026 regular season — one which saw Allen return to the team after two years playing elsewhere — with a 14-10 record.
