Fresh snow dusted several Canadian ski resorts in Alberta and British Columbia over the Aug. 29-30 weekend, giving skiers an early taste of the 2026-27 season.
Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, Kicking Horse and Panorama all saw snow at higher elevations, while the resorts remain in summer operations. Lake Louise’s latest snow report recorded 10 cm over the previous 24 hours on Aug. 31, adding to the late-summer winter preview.
The Rockies are getting a little wintery
The snowfall arrived across the Aug. 29-30 weekend, with snow settling at elevations above 7,500 feet at several resorts.
Banff Sunshine shared fresh images from around the mountain, including The Dive, Goat’s Eye and Standish, where the landscape looked more wintery than the time in the calendar.
Kicking Horse was also ready to warmly hug the change, joking that its mountain now had “one foot in summer, one foot in winter.”
Panorama also saw snow as its summer operations approached their final days. For travellers already planning their winter escape, the countdown is getting interesting. Whistler Blackcomb is set to open for the 2026-27 season on November 20, giving skiers a date to circle on the calendar.
Summer isn’t ready to pack its bags yet
Before skiers start digging their boots out of storage, they should know that the resorts aren’t already open for the winter.
The early snow at Canadian ski resorts is more of a sneak peek than a season opener. Banff Sunshine is expected to open for the new season in the coming months, while Kicking Horse and Panorama are looking toward December openings.
The fresh snow is an early glimpse of what’s waiting in the mountains when winter arrives.
Winter is already knocking
For travellers dreaming about a Canadian mountain getaway, the snowy surprise is a gentle cue to start looking ahead.
