An American Airlines disruptive passenger was restrained by fellow travellers and crew members after allegedly becoming aggressive during a flight from Dallas Fort Worth to Newark, prompting an emergency diversion to Baltimore.
The incident unfolded aboard Flight 618 on September 3, drawing attention to ongoing concerns around passenger behaviour and onboard safety.
What Really Happened Onboard?
According to reports, the disturbance began more than halfway through the flight when a passenger in the first-class cabin became increasingly belligerent. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation involving nearby passengers and a flight attendant.
Subsequent reports identified the passenger as Arthur “Layne” Lundeen, 67, of Arizona, who was travelling in first class on the Dallas-to-Newark flight. According to fellow passenger Juan Mejia, Lundeen appeared intoxicated and allegedly began verbally abusing the traveller seated beside him before the situation escalated.
With the individual continuing to resist efforts to calm the situation, several passengers assisted crew members in restraining him using flexible handcuffs and duct tape until the aircraft landed safely in Baltimore. After the emergency flight diversion, the passenger was handed over to authorities for further investigation.
American Airlines said in a statement, “The safety and security of our customers and team members is our top priority and we do not tolerate violence. We thank our team members for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding.”
